A Study on the Understanding and Needs for Medical Social Work of Cancer Patients

Abstract

|
By studying the characteristics of cancer patients who receive radiotherapy and the attitudes of medical social workers, this thesis aims to suggest of requirements for medical social work intervention. The study was conducted using SPSS 10.0 for Windows to analyze data taken from a survey involving 90 cancer patients receiving radiotherapy in 4 general hospitals in Daejeon city. The data were collected form Oct. 1st to 15th, 2003, and its analyses used averages, correlation, and regression.
The results of the above study, I propose the following measures.
1. There must be a campaign to increase the level of awareness of medical social workers. It was shown by this study that recognition of medical social workers was the lowest among cancer patients, probably because of the lack of medical social workers employed in general hospitals. Accordingly, hospital authorities or government policy must ensure an adequate staffing of medical social workers in general hospitals, and a campaign must be launched to promote medical social workers to patients and medical care givers especially.
2. Financial aid for cancer patients must be demanded through a governmental policy change. It was shown that the highest need of cancer patients receiving radiotherapy was financial aid. As a result, an expansion in medical coverage and financial aid for treatment from the government is required.
3. The information provided to cancer patients and regional social care networks must be expanded. It has been shown that cancer patients receiving radiotherapy treatment request other types of information, especially information on how and where to receive financial assistance. Therefore, medical social work must actively pursue ways to link aid associations and regional social bodies both within and outside of hospitals.
